Be Careful When You Swim In The Lakes In Alabama!

Recently I ran across a story about a helicopter pilot (KTBS News) who was flying 90 miles north of Birmingham, when the pilot spotted a giant alligator in the water with what appeared to be a full-grown deer in it's mouth. The Pilot then used his radio to call the game warden to see if he should keep the gator in his line of vision. After hardly believing the pilots description, the warden asked the pilot to follow the alligator until he could round up more men so it could be captured. After a while they tracked the gator down, and found that he was located between two houses close to Leesburg, Alabama. The article didn't mention the reason, but they found themselves having to shoot the alligator. I would think based on the alligators size, it was too dangerous to do anything else. They possibly could have tried to tranquilize it, but then what? The only solution would be to relocate it somewhere else. Florida? Sure, I bet they would just love to take in other states giant alligators. You have no other choice but to turn him into 20 pairs of boots. No community could ever be safe with him on the loose!

What I find a little unsettling though, is the fact that people tried to warn authorities that they saw this giant gator swimming around the lake. Their claims were obviously dismissed as exaggerations. The biggest ever recorded alligator in Alabama was 19ft. 6in. and was shot in 1890.  So a gator this size is very  rare.  If it was me who went to the authorities claiming that I saw the giant gator, I would want something done... and done NOW! Can you imagine walking out your back door to mow the lawn or hang laundry to dry and there's a huge alligator ready to eat you. That's not good!

This story reminds me of the old alligator movies of the 70's. Except those gators were flushed down city toilets and lived in the sewers. This gator was real, was big, and was waiting to CHOMP on some unsus-pecting swimmer. Luckily the alligator was spotted, you can't have him roaming around that far north out of the swamp. He could easily sneak up on people because they wouldn't be expecting gators to be living in that area.

So the next time your swimming in a lake down in the southern part of the country, keep your eyes open! You never know what may be lurking in the water to pull you under.

If you live in the Southern States you should expect to see some alligators, but that alligator was huge! I'm surprised no one was attacked!

I live in south florida and have a lake in my backyard. We have several alligators ranging in sizes from 2 to about 10 feet in it. As long as no one feeds them, to the point where they become unafraid of humans. Then start associating people with food, there is no real threat. Poor gator was probably older than the bastards that shot it.
